Threat to IIRE's newfound solvency
The ink on the papers for selling our current building and buying the
new one were barely dry when we got proof of how urgent this move is.
During the last couple of years fire departments around the
Netherlands have been tightening requirements for fire safety.
Officials of the Amsterdam borough where our current building is
located have been demanding for months that we upgrade the building
as a precondition for renewal of our permit. Our argument that it
would be wasteful to spend thousands on reconstructing a building
that we will be leaving in 2006 fell on deaf ears. In September we
received an ultimatum: replaces dozens of doors, add dozens of new
smoke detectors, even add additional staircases, and more, or close.
The estimated cost for meeting the borough's demands: over € 60,000.
Fortunately we have found a solution that doesn't require us to spend
tens of thousands of our hard-earned reserves on equipment that would
be ripped out in a matter of months. Unfortunately, the solution is a
more restricted permit that no longer allows us to have anybody sleep
in our current building. To carry on our work over the coming year we
will have to rent rooms for participants to sleep in at the Stayokay
hostel in the nearby Vondelpark. Stayokay, a partner in the project
at our new Timorplein location, is willing to rent us the rooms at
special low rates. Still, though this will cost us less than the ¤
60,000 in repairs, it is a substantial, unanticipated cost. And we
are likely to suffer a decrease in rental income over the coming year
now that we can no longer offer renters sleeping facilities on site.
The overall news is still good. A big additional expense in one
year's budget does not cancel out the better financial situation that
we will be in once we move. We do not expect to have to appeal to the
institute's friends year after year any more to help us out of a
financial hole. But we do have to appeal to you now. Unless we can
count once more on your generosity, this unexpected expense will make
a big dent in our provisions for the institute's financial health.
Please give us what you can to help us cushion this shock and move
forward with our plans for the future.
